FLL Jr. Program
Welcome to FIRST® LEGO® League Junior! The newest program in FIRST®, FIRST® LEGO® League Junior (FLL Jr.) introduces students aged 6 to 9 to the exciting world of science and technology. Just like FIRST® LEGO® League, FLL Jr. features a real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches, students work with LEGO® elements and moving parts to create solutions and develop a Show Me Poster to illustrate their project. On average, FLL Jr. teams meet once or twice a week for 6-8 weeks. During that time, students will become familiar with the year’s Challenge, and choose a topic to research which pertains to the task at hand. The sheer scope of the theme each year can be mind-boggling, even for adults, but the Challenge lays the groundwork for understanding larger issues, concepts that the team members will surely take with them as they grow. Once teams do the research, they will build a model and create a Show Me Poster to present their findings. A Show Me Poster is a illustration of the team’s research into the task at hand, and a illustration of the team’s journey throughout the season. This provides an opportunity for them, as a team, to share what they studied, share what they discovered, and a chance to show how each team member was involved and what each team member learned as a result of their research. In recap, younger elementary school students get to:
- Design and build challenge solutions using LEGO® components.
- Create a Show Me Poster and practice presentation skills
- Research challenges facing today’s scientists
- Discover real-world math and science
- Begin to develop team-working skills
- Engage in team activities guided by FLL Jr. Core Values
FLL Jr. Core Values
The cornerstones of the FLL Jr. program are its Core Values, which emphasize contributions of others, friendly sportsmanship, learning, and community involvement.
We ask that everyone affiliated with FLL Jr. honor these values.
- We are a team.
- We do the work. Our coaches and mentors help us learn, but we find the answers ourselves.
- We share our experiences and discoveries with others.
- We are helpful, kind, and show respect when we work, play, and share. We call this Gracious Professionalism.
- We are all winners.
- We have fun!
